FedEx has a supplier contact tool that is used by sourcing professionals throughout all FedEx companies to identify prospective suppliers for all goods and services being purchased
To give a fighting chance to underrepresented business groups, FedEx created a Supplier Diversity Program in 1992. Over the past three years, FedEx has gone from spending just above $9 billion dollars a year with diverse and small suppliers to just above $12 billion in 2019. However, only $2.5 billion was spent with minority and women-owned businesses, while the rest went to general small businesses.
It is not clear from FedEx’s metrics if other diverse groups like veterans, LGBTQ, disabled people, and others make up part of these suppliers. In their Global Citizenship report, FedEx makes mention of diversity alliances and industry associations that help establish learning opportunities and networking events for diverse suppliers.
With its large annual revenues and supplier spend, FedEx has the capacity to impact more diverse suppliers going forward and play a more vital role in leveling the corporate playing field for diverse suppliers. While registration on its supplier portal does not guarantee diverse suppliers contracts, it is a way to be considered when opportunities arise.
Beyond our commitment to sourcing more sustainable products and services, we help to lift economies by investing in people and communities where we live and work. This includes seeking diverse suppliers and strengthening our supply chain by sourcing from small, minority- and women-owned businesses. During FY19, e-commerce played a larger role than ever in our ability to support even more diverse suppliers.
Research proves there are many benefits for businesses that make diversity a priority and promote inclusion. But there’s another, far more important reason why we embrace diversity and inclusion: It’s simply the right thing to do.
