Ford’s supplier diversity program has its roots in civil rights protests in 1968. In that sense, it's the precursor to the current focus on diverse businesses and sadly shows how little progress has been made. Ford created a program designed to identify, assist and award contracts to underrepresented small businesses known as the Inner-City Supplier Development Program.
In addition to being one of the first, Ford has one of the more impactful supplier diversity programs of the Fortune 500. Through 2019, Ford has spent over $153 billion dollars with underrepresented business groups
Recognizing that opportunities for underrepresented small businesses to become tier 1 suppliers still remained limited, Ford created WIN or ‘Widening the Inclusion Network’. This initiative complements the work being done under their tier 1 program by encouraging and supporting those suppliers to work with smaller underrepresented businesses. Through these two tiers, Ford has spent billions of dollars with minority, women, LGBT, and veteran-owned businesses among other groups.
To develop and grow diverse suppliers, Ford has additional programs that evidence its leadership in supplier diversity. Mentor Me provides corporate executives as consultants to diverse suppliers and the Joint Technology Transfer shares intellectual property.
A key shortcoming in supplier diversity programs is the varying and inadequate reporting. To enhance tier 2 reporting, Ford supported the development of a new platform that allows data to be entered for multiple customers using a single interface.
