Our Review

Like most Fortune 500 companies Disney has a Supplier Diversity Program that enables diverse suppliers to compete for sourcing opportunities. In 2020, Disney spent $439 million through this program, down from $591 million in 2019.

Disney identifies minority, women, veteran, service-disabled, LGBTQ, and disabled-owned enterprises that are capable of meeting their requirements and validates diverse status through certification organizations.  Disney has a second tier program for its primary suppliers.

Disney expects interested and potential diverse suppliers to demonstrate sales volume, profitability, and financial stability in the past three years, as well as deliver a comprehensive product or service. The company also expects suppliers to have a presence in its key markets in the U.S. (Northeast, Orlando, Southern California) and possess a skilled management team with experience delivering to the media/ entertainment/theme parks industry.

What seems missing from Disney’s program are articulate plans or reports that detail the work the company does with diverse suppliers. While there are various initiatives the company uses to source and empower diverse employees, there does not seem to be extra effort put in doing the same for diverse suppliers. Disney doesn’t appear to have any development initiatives for diverse suppliers and the three year financial requirements can be a significant barrier.
