Our Review

The world’s biggest retail store has a well developed supplier diversity initiative, spending $11 billion in 2019. However, with expenses totaling over $500 billion a year Walmart still has an opportunity to do more for America’s underrepresented business groups. Current spending under its Supplier Inclusion Program is a small percentage of the giant retailer’s supplier spend per annum.

In 2011, Walmart pledged to spend billions of dollars on supplies from women owned businesses and through 2019 had spent nearly $30 billion on that initiative. In 2018 Walmart launched a Supplier Inclusion Showcase where products from minority and other previously disadvantaged owned small businesses can be found. It is not clear however if the same products are stocked in all their stores.

Walmart recognizes underrepresented small companies with certification from National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC), USBLN Disability Supplier Diversity Program (DSDP), US Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce (USPAACC)the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.

The company hosts events and conferences to promote supplier inclusion through match-making and networking. However, the last events listed were in 2019 and its not clear if Walmart transitioned to virtual events in 2020 and for 2021.

Walmart remains ambitious in its goals and the Supplier Inclusion program aims to increase the current pool of over 3,000 diversity suppliers through education and mentoring. There is significant room for improvement given that Walmart works with over 100,000 suppliers.
